Green Card Immigration Bill Fails in House

The U.S. House of Representatives voted down 257-158 this week a Republican bill to create a new Green Card category for foreign students holding doctorate and master's degrees from U.S. universities in science, technology, engineering, and math.

This punts negotiations back with the Senate between House sponsor Lamar Smith (Texas), chair of the House Judiciary Committee, and New York Senator Charles Schumer (D). Senator Schumer is seeking to close a deal and create a bipartisan immigration bill in time for the lame duck session of Congress after the elections.
