A weekly update illustrating some of the ways that Helicopter Association International (HAI) is “keeping the rotors turning” for our members.
Cade Clark, Vice President, Government Affairs
This week, Cade and John Shea, director of government affairs, traveled to the Bell Textron Advanced Vertical Lift Center in Arlington, Virginia, to learn more about the company’s work and hear an update on its current projects (see photo at right). Cade and John shared information on HAI’s current legislative activities, including workforce development projects and the rollout of the Utah Rotor Pathway Program.
While Congress is still out on its August recess, House leaders are preparing various strategies in the face of the next government shutdown deadline. Congress will have just 13 workdays upon its return from recess to devise a plan to keep the government funded past the fiscal deadline of September 30.
In the Senate, spending leaders have yet to even introduce a single one of their 12 annual funding bills, let alone mark up or pass them on the floor. With this time crunch, lawmakers are considering another short-term spending extension that keeps the government running until late November or early December.
Matt Callan, Director, Regulations and International Affairs
Last week, Matt tabulated survey results from HAI members operating with night-vision goggles. Results from the survey, along with data obtained through research, will be used to work with the FAA and supplemental type certificate holders in an attempt to amend certain operational restrictions.
Matt also drafted HAI comments regarding a UAS operator’s petition for exemption from FAA regulations. He also participated as a team member on an ICAO teleconference in support of developing a new Onshore Heliport Design and Service Manual to replace the outdated ICAO Heliport Manual (Document 9261).

Zac Noble, Deputy Director, Flight Operations and Technical Services
Zac recently attended a commencement ceremony at Blue Ridge Community College in Weyers Cave, Virginia, where graduates of the college’s Aviation Maintenance Technician course prepared to the professional aviation community. All of these students (see photo at left) had job offers before graduation, pending receipt of their Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Certificate.
