Fly Neighborly Forum

The generation of helicopter noise greatly hampers efficient operations. Thorough research and testing by NASA, FAA, and the Department of Transportation’s Volpe Center have resulted in scientifically derived flight techniques that successfully minimize the effects of helicopter noise emissions. Our members have developed operational and safety strategies for noise abatement techniques in critical phases of flight, including departure, enroute/maneuvering, and arrival, with considerations for VFR situations. This revamped course includes media-rich video and auditory examples. Credit for attendance in this forum includes FAA Basic Wings Credit, a Rotor Safety Challenge (RSC) course participation token, and an RSC certificate of attendance (after completion of six RSC courses).

HAI Safety Symposium: Wanted Alive (the NTSB Most Wanted List)

This year’s safety symposium will include a panel discussion, moderated by the HAI Safety Working Group Chair, featuring helicopter industry and government representatives discussing critical safety issues and NTSB safety recommendations. The NTSB will kick off the discussion with an overview of its 2019-2020 Most Wanted List (MWL) and will present lessons learned and recommendations from its recent investigation into the AS-350 helicopter accident which occurred on March 11, 2018, in New York City. The panel will then examine the issues identified in the investigation and identify strategies for overall safety improvements, including those recommended in the MWL. HAI HELI-EXPO attendees are invited to join us for coffee and breakfast and to learn more about what they can do to implement and champion the NTSB MWL and its recommended critical safety improvements.

Safety Directors Forum: Elevating Safety Culture and Professionalism

How’s your safety culture? We all have one, but some are high-performing while others are deficient and can actually contribute to accident chains. At this forum, we will discuss practical ways to improve safety on both the organizational level (the safety culture) and on the personal level (professionalism). Learn how to assess your safety culture and to apply a just-culture philosophy and the tools to take it to the next level. Discuss the benefits of increasing the level of professionalism among you and your colleagues and hear about tactics you can use to make that happen.

Decision-Making Stories

Why make your own mistakes when you can learn from others? This session presents the stories of real-life incidents and accidents, and the decisions that caused them or prevented them. During a review of two scenarios, attendees will interact to make collective decisions. We will then evaluate each decision to emphasize how the incident or accident could have been avoided.

The Intersection of Safety and the Law

When you are on fire and screaming toward the ground is no time to be reading the flight manual for the first time … or to be thinking about your legal rights and responsibilities. “Legal” and “safe” are not contradictory terms, and this presentation will give you some takeaways to ease your mind on both subjects. Attendees are encouraged to develop a habit of asking themselves, “What would a very cautious, competent, and prudent person do in my situation?” Bring your legal questions and ask an aviation lawyer.
