ROTOR Photo & Video Contest Rules

Categories

  • Helicopters at Work: show us your photos and videos of civil helicopters
  • Helicopters in the Military: submit your photos and videos of military aircraft in action
  • Drones at Work: we want to see your drones!
  • People and Their Helicopters/Drones: show the aircraft AND the people who fix, fly, or just look good standing next to a helicopter or drone (but then, who doesn’t?)
  • Digitally Enhanced Photos and Videos: enter your favorite art shots

Eligibility

  • Any photographer 18 years or older is eligible to enter, whether professional or amateur, HAI member or nonmember.
  • Employees, independent contractors, officers, and directors of HAI, and the immediate family members and persons living in the same household of such persons, are not eligible to win the ROTOR Photo and Video Contest.
  • All entries must be uploaded through the contest portal by midnight ET on December 1

How to Enter

  • Who: Any photographer 18 years or older is eligible to enter, whether professional or amateur, HAI member or nonmember.
  • What: Each photo or video must contain a depiction of at least part or all of a helicopter or drone.
  • When: All entries must be uploaded by midnight ET on Dec. 1, 2018.
  • How Many: Photographers/Videographers can upload up to five photos and videos in each category, for a maximum of 25 photos and/or videos. You may enter a combination of photos and videos if you choose.
  • File Types:
    • Photo Contest: file types accepted are .jpg or .png. Submit your photo at the maximum resolution possible. To be eligible for an award, your photo should be at least 300 dpi at 8 inches x 10 inches.
    • Video Contest: any video file type may be submitted, but mp4 is preferred. Minimum resolution for all categories is 1280x720, maximum resolution is 8k (7680 x 4320).
      • Only your best, raw video with or without sound will be accepted. Preferred length of your submission should be between 5 and 30 seconds (Note: for the Digitally-enhanced category, you may use any post-produced special effects).
      • You may submit a 30 second video clip, but specify which part of the 30 second clip you consider the best. This is useful if you start recording, but the best part of your clip is between 15-20 seconds of the file.
      • Commercials and professionally produced/edited projects are not eligible to win a prize. We are only interested in getting your best individual clips.
  • Content Ownership: All photos and videos must be the original work of the entrant. Entering photographers and videographers must certify that that they own the copyright to all photos and videos submitted for the ROTOR Photo and Video Contest and that there are no third-party rights to or claims on the photos and videos. Entering other people’s work as your own is considered theft of their work.

Prizes

  • Category Winner: A photo winner and a video winner will be selected from each of the five contest categories. The category winning photos will be published in the Winter issue of ROTOR and will be displayed at that year’s HAI HELI-EXPO. They will also be displayed on the contest website. Videos will be displayed on the contest website. The person submitting a category winner will receive a cash prize of $100.
  • Grand Prize Winner: The highest-scoring photo and video from all the categories will be selected as the Grand Prize winner. The Grand Prize winning photo will be published in the Winter issue of ROTOR and will be displayed at that year’s HAI HELI-EXPO. It will also be displayed on the contest website. Videos will be displayed on the contest website. The person submitting the Grand Prize photo will receive a cash prize of $500.
  • Viewer’s Choice Winner: After the deadline for contest entries, the public will be invited to vote for their favorite. A Viewers’ Choice Award will be awarded to the entry with the most votes. The Viewers’ Choice winning photo will be published in the Winter issue of ROTOR and will be displayed at that year’s HAI HELI-EXPO. It will also be displayed on the contest website. Videos will be displayed on the contest website. The Viewers’ Choice Award carries no cash prize.
  • Honorable Mentions: At HAI’s discretion, photos and videos that have not been recognized with any of the above awards may be selected as Honorable Mentions. Honorable Mention photos and videos may be displayed on the contest website, used as Photo of the Day in ROTOR Daily, or used in other HAI publications.

Submission Agreement

  • By entering the ROTOR Photo & Video Contest, photographers grant to Helicopter Association International (HAI) an irrevocable, nonexclusive, royalty-free, transferable, assignable, and sublicensable license to use, reproduce, publish, adapt, modify, distribute, and display any submitted photos in print electronic, and all other media, including in HAI publications, media, and marketing materials, and at HAI offices, locations, and events. By entering the ROTOR Photo & Video Contest, photographers also grant to HAI an irrevocable, nonexclusive, royalty-free right to use photographer’s name, likeness, and biographic material for advertising, trade, and any other lawful purposes, including without limitation the purpose of publicizing and promoting HAI, ROTOR Magazine, ROTOR Daily, HAI media, and other programs in connection with which the photographs are used pursuant to the rights granted above, but not as an endorsement of any product or service.
  • HAI and others make no representations or warranties of any kind, express or implied, regarding any prize or any contestant’s participation in the ROTOR Photo & Video Contest. HAI and others shall not be responsible or liable for any loss, damage, cost, or injury that arises from or relates to participation in the ROTOR Photo & Video Contest, or winning or use of a prize, including but not limited to: (i) late, lost, delayed, damaged, misdirected, incomplete, or unintelligible submissions; (ii) telephone, electronic, hardware or software program, network, Internet, or computer malfunctions, failures, viruses, or difficulties of any kind; (iii) failed, incomplete, garbled, or delayed computer transmissions; (iv) incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by any website users, tampering, hacking, or the downloading of any material in connection with the ROTOR Photo & Video Contest; (v) theft or destruction or unauthorized access to any website(s); or (vi) any other condition that may cause the ROTOR Photo & Video Contest to be disrupted or corrupted. HAI reserves the right, at its sole discretion and without prior notice, to suspend or cancel the ROTOR Photo & Video Contest or alter the rules for any reason, including, but not limited to, if at any time a computer virus, technical problem, or other unforeseeable event alters or corrupts the administration of the ROTOR Photo & Video Contest.
  • By entering the ROTOR Photo & Video Contest, each entrant releases and agrees to indemnify and hold harmless HAI and its subsidiaries, affiliates, directors, officers, employees, partners, and agents from any liability whatsoever for any claims, costs, losses, or damages of any kind (including, without limitation, those related to personal injury, death, damage to property, infringement of propriety rights, rights of publicity or privacy or defamation) arising out of or in connection with: (i) the entry submitted by entrant; (ii) entering or participating in the ROTOR Photo & Video Contest; and/or (iii) accepting or using any prize. However, nothing in these official rules shall limit HAI’s liability under any category of liability which under the law of an entrant’s jurisdiction cannot lawfully be limited.
