Ed DiCampli, chief operating officer of HAI, joined other members of the US Helicopter Safety Team (USHST) Steering Committee to host the group's annual face-to-face meeting at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, AZ, on August 7and 8.

Co-chaired by Raj Helwig of Air Methods Corp and Wayne Fry of the FAA, the Steering Committee reviewed the progress of the 22 helicopter safety enhancement (SEs) currently under development by a team of industry volunteers on the first day. The SEs are designed to specifically address safety gaps identified as causal factors in accidents.

"The SEs were derived through a data-driven analysis of 104 fatal accidents. The short-term goal, once the SEs are completed and adopted, is to reduce the fatal accident rate 20 percent by 2020," DiCampli says. The longer term goal is zero.

Day 2 was packed full of safety presentations from both USHST members and industry professionals with 90 people in attendance. Metrics, culture, mentoring, training, outreach, and Infrastructure were some of the areas covered.
